About the MLJ

Description

The MLJ is a refereed, quarterly publication of the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (NFMLTA). Published by Wiley-Blackwell, it is devoted to research and discussion about the learning and teaching of foreign and second languages. Editor Leo van Lier works with an international editorial board that guides the shaping of the journal, as well as with over 100 scholars who serve as referees for submitted manuscripts. The 2005 acceptance rate for manuscripts submitted for consideration was 11%.

As of 2007, the MLJ has a fifth issue. This additional issue is a Focus Issue and a Monograph in alternating years. The Monograph/Focus Issue series has its own editor, Barbara Lafford, Arizona State University, who works closely with the editor of the MLJ.

The MLJ is devoted to research and discussion about the learning and teaching of foreign and second languages. The Journal strives to maintain a balance of languages represented in each issue. Types of articles published include essays and research studies, using quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Each issue of the MLJ contains about 160 pages, which include 5–7 articles, Reviews, and News and Notes of the Profession. Issues 2 and 4 include a column called Perspectives in which authors discuss timely issues of concern to the profession of second language learning and teaching. Issue 3 includes a review of Dissertations published in that year. Special issues appear on occasion. The MLJ web site offers with each issue the column, In Other Professional Journals, a listing of articles of interest to MLJ readers that appear in other journals.

Frequency of Publication: 5 issues per year (approximately 150 pages each).

Evaluation: manuscripts refereed by at least three specialist readers.

Time from Submission to Decision: normally within 90 days; time from acceptance to publication usually no longer than 1 year.

Acceptance Rate: 12–15% of manuscripts submitted are accepted.

Articles Published per Volume: approximately 20–30 articles plus editorials and comments in Readers' Forum.

Book Reviews per Volume: approximately 200.

Ownership: The Modern Language Journal is owned and copyrighted by the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations.

Payment: authors of articles receive 2 complimentary copies of the issue in which their work is published; authors of book reviews receive 1 copy.

Offprints: available at cost, but must be purchased directly from the reprint service at the time author reads proofs.
